Physical therapy and breathing tubes

Gabe continues to improve. When Nakel got to the hospital today he was propped up in bed. He is more and more lucid and able to communicate. There are two levels in the ICU and he has been in the highest level. The doctors think that Gabe should be able to breathe on his own now and will be taking him off the breathing tube. If he is able to, he will be "stepped down" to the lower level of the ICU. This is encouraging news as it means he is that much closer to being able to see his girls.
The physical therapist wants to start therapy with him today which will consist of getting out of bed and standing by the bed. It's a slow start, but such an improvment from where he was on Sunday. Gabe's eyes are still swollen shut so he is limited in what he can do. They don't want him walking into things. Once the swelling goes down in his left eye, he will be able to do more.
Gabe asked the nurse for a mirror today. She gave him one and he was discouraged by it. The good news is it will only get better and he has such support from his father and wife who were right by his side.
Nakel and Gabe received a beautiful basket for some ladies in the ward and were so touched by the kind message. Nakel has been reading Gabe the messages left on facebook or texted to her and he has been so encouraged by them. Tonight the young men in their ward will be mowing their lawn and pulling weeds. What great support they have been shown and it is very much appreciated.
Nakel will be driving home tomorrow and will return to SLC on Sunday. Her girls will be thrilled to see her and there has been an improvement in their moods knowing that they will be with their mom again.

  1. This is all such wonderful news. Nakel I just wanted you to know that although my darling sister-in-law didn't sign her name to the card she contributed to the basket and put the whole thing together. I'm touched by the willingness and love others have for you and even complete strangers that just know that your heart is hurting. We love you guys and we are praying for Gabe and your family daily! 2. Jen, the basket was BEAUTIFUL and we were so touched by the message left inside one of the books. Does she work at the same hospital he is at? I would LOVE to personally thank her. It was such an unexpected surprise that warmed our hearts and left us weeping. We are already using the daily book to track his progress. Thank you so much to all of the thoughtful people who contributed. Love you guys, and can't wait for Gabe to be in nursery.

  3. Gabe--I understand you asked where I was today. I have been eating your food and sleeping in your bed! Only joking on that part because then when you came home you would have mother-in-law germs in bed instead of the bed bugs you now have. I'm only kidding again Gabe. I love you and we are praying and fasting for your quick recovery. Bishop Buckley put your name on prayer roll in Nauvoo since it was the only temple open on Monday. Your name is also on the Boise prayer roll. Your yard looks really nice since the teachers mowed it.
Hey-wanna go wake boarding this next Saturday? It is supposed to be a really nice day. I'm sure glad you went last Saturday and I kept thinking before I left I should take my camera but then I talked myself out of it because I have so many wake board pixs of everyone. Wish I had listened to that still small voice.
We still love you--always will and know we are constantly praying for you and as the day goes by, I pray for you in my heart. Marla
    Have you notified Dale?

  4. Love that message from your Mom Nakel. CUTE! Yes, she does work on that very floor but she has been coming in at 7p.m. She delivered it herself yesterday but you were already gone. She's seen Gabe but I'm sure Gabe doesn't know that. She was gonna drop in on you if she could and was hoping to give you a hug for me. Just look for a beautiful -brown haired , slender girl. Felicia is her name! We love you guys! JEN

  8. Jenn,

I will look for her. We always get kicked out of the ICU at 7 for the nurses to change over. What a wonderful job she has and does. The nurses in that department are so strong and caring and compassionate and are truly life savers. I hope that I can find her and tell her in person.
