Today Gabe is resting semi-comfortably in bed recovering from his 13+ hour surgery. It was an exhausting day for my dad and I waiting without knowing what was going on, for the surgeons who refused to rest even for a lunch break, but especially for Gabe, whose vitals remained as solid as a rock while enduring the equivalent of a 13 hour boxing match.
His wonderful surgeons were able to reconstruct most of his face using hundreds of screws and plates in order to piece it all back together again. The head surgeon said that it was the most difficult and intense facial reconstruction that he's ever had to do. Gabe will still have to have more surgeries in the future mostly for cosmetic purposes concentrating on his nose, but the surgeons were successful in protecting his brain, and building up a nice support for his future surgeries.
Gabe has been asking me through his notes to take pictures so that he will be able to see the results and the progress he has made. His doctor from Boise e-mailed me the picture of him today taken the day of his accident. It was amazing to see how much improvement has already taken place with the wonderful doctors here. I know this is the best place for Gabe to be and I'm so appreciative of the doctors in Boise who were able to admit that they weren't able to handle the surgery as well as the doctors here in SLC could, and then getting him here as soon as possible.
Gabe's face is starting to swell up again and has been sleeping all day. When the doctors moved him back down to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit this morning, Gabe became very agitated and slightly "combative"--surely a combination of the anesthesia wearing off and an indication of the amount of pain he is having to endure. It took 5 people to contain him and they ended up having to restrain his arms and ankles so he doesn't keep trying to run or pull out any of the tubes. He has also been heavily sedated so we haven't been able to communicate at all with him today. However, just previous to this fiasco, he squeezed my hand and rubbed my fingers. Hopefully he will continue to get some good rest today.
The surgeons and the opthamologists were concerned about his left eye since they had to do so much surgery around the orbital sockets. However, when they came back to check it today he responded to the light. As for his right eye, it appears that it is still unresponsive.
Overall, Gabe has shown that he is a fighter and can endure just about anything. He is going to get through this and be stronger than he ever was before...I'm sure of it. That which doesn't kill you can only make you stronger.
I am so glad to hear that surgery went well. Keep your chin up! God never gives us more than we can handle just wait for the good to come! Prayers & Thoughts are with both of you! Shelly
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the progress so far. I have been checking daily. What an amazing and strong man Gabe is and what an amazing wife you are to him.
ReplyDeleteThinking about you and your family.
Gabe & Nakel,
ReplyDeleteI am praising The Lord for your strength, courage and positive outlook during this incredibly painful journey of healing and renewal. I have kept God on "Speed dial" for my pleas on your behalf since I learned of the accident. I am so grateful for this blog site to keep up with your progress. I am overjoyed that you are being cared for competently and without delay. Like Apostle Paul, boast in your infirmities. For when you are weak in flesh, you are strong in the Lord. There is nothing He can't do if you believe and ask earnestly in prayer.
Love in Christ,
Angela Hoge
Nakel,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the updates. How did the valve trial go for his trach? Were you able to hear his voice? It seems like the surgery went well. I am so glad!! You have been in our thoughts and prayers all week. What a great idea to take pictures of his progress along the way. If they are not too tender, I would love to see those pictures posted on your blog. I bet the improvement is already noticeable. I admire your strength. You WILL get through this. If there is anything we can do, please let us know!!
xoxo
XOXO
ReplyDeleteMy Flower Bud is as strong as a Mountian, maybe your nick name should be changed;). Praise the Lord that Gabes brain is completely intact, that fact alone still blows me away. I miss you being around, and hope that you both will be in Boise soon and on the way to even more fast and positive recovery. And dito what Laura said!!
ReplyDeleteLove Power Puff
Of course you know you and Gabe are constantly in my thoughts and my heart prayers throughout the day. I love you both and know we will overcome and look back on this summer as the one where Gabe dumped the fish back in the water. I love you.
ReplyDeleteIs he a champ or WHAT? I just for a minute had a glimpse into a couple of years ahead (when this is all over) of the love and joy you will share because of this experience. You will look back and have such tremendous gratitude for each other. I'm so glad you're in good hands. Isn't modern medicine amazing?
ReplyDeleteIt truly is Tawna. I am realizing every day that there are people who are much smarter than I am, that keep coming up with AMAZING things that literally save lives. We are blessed to have the doctors and the medicine and the technology that we have today.
